Governor Sanford's Indecent Proposal

There has been more embarrassment for Mark Sanford, the Republican governor of South Carolina, whose affair with an Argentine journalist has derailed his presidential ambitions and threatens to ruin his political career.

Sanford’s wife, Jenny, revealed that she had learnt of the affair earlier this year when she discovered a letter the governor had written to his lover, since identified as Maria Belen Chapur, a former television producer now living in Buenos Aires.

Sanford said she had told her husband to end the affair but he asked permission to travel to Argentina to talk to the woman face-to-face. “I said absolutely not,” his wife said. “It’s one thing to forgive adultery. It’s another to condone it.”

The good times keep rolling for Governor Sanford. I thought his 15 minutes of fame were over when I wrote about his refusal to accept stimulus funds on his state's behalf. Thankfully, he has shown his true colors over the last few weeks. His "hike in the Appalachian mountains" magically turned into a long weekend with his Argentinian mistress. Sanford put on an Oscar winning performance when he admitted to his infidelity. If his actions hadn't been so publicly self-serving in the past, I probably would have believed he was contrite. The icing on the cake came when his wife disclosed that he asked her permission to see his mistress. Who does that? Did he honestly think she would say "Of course Mark! Call me when you arrive in Argentina." Mark Sanford has a huge set of balls to pose that question to his wife.

I feel bad for the Sanford kids. He has 4 young sons who have to hear about their father's infidelity wherever they go. At times, children can be more evil than adults. I hope the Sanford sons aren't catching too much hell at school. Fantasia Barrino, High Point, NC's own, has a song called "Free Yourself" that goes well with Ms. Sanford feelings towards her husband.

Baby you don't pay no mind
You act like you don't love me no more
Maybe you need space or some time
Your attitude is unpredictable
And I don't want to make you unhappy
If you're not happy then you're free to go on
Cause I don't want you stayin' around
If I make you so miserable
