Kelly Clarkson: The Paparazzi Punching Bag

Kelly Clarkson has been getting a lot of heat lately—not for her music, but for her recent weight gain. Kelly has never been a skinny mini, but in the past few months, it seems like she forgot to mix in a few treadmill sessions. Kelly has been doing the publicity rounds for her new album All I Ever Wanted, and instead of the focus being on her songs, it’s on her looks. And she’s had enough!

Kelly is currently in Australia pushing her album, and was a guest on the Kyle and Jackie O Show this morning. She told them, "For seven years it's been happening. It's like, 'OK cool, the fat joke.’” But despite the negative press, Kelly insists she’s okay with the way she looks. She says, "I love my body. I'm very much OK with it. I don't think artists are ever the ones who have the problem with their weight, it is other people."

Pop stars like Kelly Clarkson are under an immense amount of pressure to always look good. Their appearance is just as important as their music, their movies, or whatever else they decide to do. There are some celebrities who wouldn't even see the limelight if they didn't maintain their sexy aesthetic. Kelly Clarkson is receiving a lot of mean spirited scrutiny. Nevertheless, she has to know that her weight is unacceptable for someone in her profession. Hollywood is a very shallow place where looks typically outweigh talent. She says she is happy with her figure and I believe her. Unfortunately, marketers and promoters don't care how she feels about herself. Kelly may be producing the best music of her career, but it won't be promoted unless she returns to a smaller dress size. It's not right, but it's the reality of the situation. If Kelly wants the fat jokes to stop, she needs to shed some pounds.

De La Soul and Devin the Dude showed thicker women some love when they created "Baby Phat." This track is needed because thicker women are rarely celebrated in song.

When I stare into your dark browns I get
Overwhelmed, overjoyed, overstep
My bounds, on your touchy subject
Your weight, your shape's not what I date
It's you, my crew don't mind it thick
Every woman ain't a video chick
Or runway model anorexic
