Although this holiday is rooted in capitalism, I still think it's valuable because it celebrates love. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">Valentine's Day <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;"> provides you the opportunity to <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">show your significant other that you love him or her in an extravagant way. I am a firm believer that you should treat your partner like royalty everyday, but I understand that some people think otherwise. The day's events shouldn't be limited to couples though. I bought my mother a dozen roses and some chocolates for <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">Valentine's Day <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> two years ago. She cried tears of joy. I take the love people give me for granted sometimes. I need to do a better job of letting my loved ones know that I appreciate them.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I hope all you lovers out there are using annual leave on Monday. I would hate for you to cut your V-Day festivities short over a little thing like work :)
The K-12 system in our country is in bad shape. Schools are underfunded, teachers are overworked, and more often than not the curriculum is antiquated. Videos like this make me cautiously optimistic that there is hope for the next generation of students. Hopefully, this video will inspire administrators in other school districts to think of better ways to reach the kids.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
Julius Coxswainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09210721353101380170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2351930695794112678.post-56781297632564735202010-02-12T20:20:00.011-05:002010-02-12T23:22:49.338-05:00No More "Music" in MTV

MTV removes "Music Television" From Iconic Logo

The logo change is new, but the MTV programmers decided years ago that they would move away from the network's initial purpose. MTV was founded in an effort to promote well known and underground artists from a variety of genres. The network helped catapult the importance of the music video and it gave musicians a platform to perform their craft. Nowadays, this pioneering station is more likely to show two drunk guys fighting over a bowl of cereal than actual musical programming.

MTV2 is following in MTV's wake by showing re-runs of the same crap MTV puts out there. I hope another network is created to give aspiring musicians and music lovers a chance to hear and see what they love.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Talk about a total lack of institutional control. <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">The administrators at these two high schools need<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;"> to be ashamed of themselves. I have seen my fair share of fights at high school sporting events. Things can get pretty heated when <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;"> rivals collide. That being said, CMS never kept students or fans from coming to the games. Any student who fought at a game was arrested and/or suspended from school for at least a week.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-size: small;">Banning students from the game punishes those who abide by the rules.
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">Howard Zinn, an author, teacher and political activist whose book “A People’s History of the United States” became a million-selling leftist alternative to mainstream texts, died Wednesday in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 87 and lived in Auburndale, Mass. Published in 1980 with little promotion and a first printing of 5,000, “A People’s History” was, fittingly, a people’s best-seller, attracting a wide audience through word of mouth and reaching 1 million sales in 2003.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">I was introduced to Howard Zinn a few months ago. A co-worker of mine told me about Zinn's political and historical ideologies and I was impressed. I read Zinn's memoir You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train in about a week. I would have finished it sooner, but work was keeping me busy. You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train is probably the best book I have ever read. Zinn lived a long and impactful life. His involvement in the Civil Rights Movement alone makes him an extraordinarily influential person. I don't agree with everything Dr. Zinn has said or written, but I have the utmost respect for the man. His passion, dedication, and revolutionary spirit will be sorely missed.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Sunday it is cutting about 11,200 jobs at its Sam's Club warehouse division as it outsources in-store product sampling in an effort to win more customers and boost lagging sales.

The terminations represent about 10 percent of the warehouse club operator's 110,000 staffers across its 600 stores. About 10,000 members of the demonstration department, most part-time workers, were let go as Wal-Mart announced it will hire marketing company Shopper Events to handle the jobs. Employees were told the news at mandatory meetings Sunday morning. Carolinas figures were unavailable.

I go to Sam's Club on a pretty regular basis. There is no better place to get 3 pounds of broccoli for $10. At times, I go on a bulk buying frenzy. I don't need 700 bags of green tea, but a part of my soul won't let me leave that tea on the shelf.

The line lines at Sam's are usually ridiculously long. I have no idea why the company feels it isn't making enough money. Methinks that these layoffs are the result of Capitalistic greed. Sam Walton's companies have put a lot of its competitors out of business. I find it very hard to believe that they need to lay people off. I hope those being affected by this are able to find employment elsewhere. I know from personal experience that living check to check is rough. Sam's is cold as ice for letting people go during these hard economic times.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">Race relations in the United States would be a completely different without Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I appreciate the non-violent approach he took towards hatred and injustice. I have no idea how he dealt with the death threats and constant attacks on his character. His desire to get Black people equal rights outweighed his fear of death. It is mind boggling to me that certain states took decades to acknowledge Dr. King and his accomplishments. I could write at length about that foolishness. but I don't want to dwell on negativity.

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: justify;">I think Dr. King would be a fan of Gil Scott-Heron and most of the messages in Scott-Heron's music. "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is one of my favorites.
I think that's an excessive sentence given the fact that no one was hurt physically by the burglary, but this brother deserves a severe punishment. I have had my property stolen/burglarized. The feeling you get when you know someone stole something valuable from you is almost indescribable. I couldn't overcome the helplessness that consumed my mind. Those feelings were amped to another level when the police took a cavalier attitude towards my situation. He established a new era of R&B with an explosive, raw voice that symbolized masculinity, passion and the joys and sorrow of romance in songs such as "Close the Door," "It Don't Hurt Now," "Love T.K.O." and other hits that have since become classics.

USA Today

Teddy Pendergrass is the man. His voice immediately grabs the your attention and it demands that you pay attention to the message it carries. I love rap music like a brother, but I have more R&B music from the 60's, 70's, and 80's on my hard drive. I think that musicians during the aforementioned time periods had more respect for their craft. When music with a message is combined with live instrumentation, the results are timeless. Teddy Pendergrass' music falls into the timeless category. Although he has passed on, his music and influence on other musicians will never disappear.

Julius Coxswainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09210721353101380170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2351930695794112678.post-1447008107769323132010-01-13T02:21:00.001-05:002010-01-14T11:41:49.993-05:00Hard Times in Haiti
Haitians piled bodies along the devastated streets of their capital Wednesday after the strongest earthquake hit the poor Caribbean nation in more than 200 years crushed thousands of structures, from schools and shacks to the National Palace and the U.N. peacekeeping headquarters. Solomon Jackson Jr. won the $259.9 million Powerball jackpot last summer, he said someone else would be blessed with some of that money, too. Thursday, when he handed Morris College a check for $10 million during a jubilant midday program on campus, students, faculty and staff learned they were that collective somebody.

"This is one of the four greatest milestones in the 100 years of existence for Morris College," said Luns C. Richardson, who has served as Morris' president since 1972.

The State

Occasionally, my co-workers and I discuss the possibility of winning the lottery. These conversations are always hilarious because I work with people who aren't materialistic or gluttonous. Instead of buying luxury vehicles and homes in the Cayman Islands, my co-workers say they would give large sums of money to inner-city schools, battered women's shelters, and hospitals in various developing countries.

I would pay off my student loans and the college expenses of my siblings, donate some money to the church that played a profound impact on my development, and make sure my parents could retire comfortably. I am sure I would make some purchases that some would call flashy, but most of my money would go to helping others. I am glad Rev. Jackson gave $10 million to Morris College. Morris is really small and I know it has had financial struggles in the past. It's good to know that even though we live in a "me" first society, there are still people out there willing to lend a helping hand.

Cause even though when times get rough
You never turned away
You were right there
And I thank you

Julius Coxswainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09210721353101380170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2351930695794112678.post-64405258724814611142010-01-08T22:31:00.003-05:002010-01-08T22:33:02.959-05:00SOS in SC Steve Benjamin, the attorney who helped radio host Tom Joyner win a posthumous pardon for his great-uncles who were executed for a crime they didn’t commit, denounced a racial slur spray painted on the side of Columbia City Hall last week that may have been intended to intimidate Benjamin and another African-American candidate for mayor of South Carolina’s capital city. City workers removed the message, “No n----r mayor, die,” from the building’s wall early last Wednesday after officials discovered it, city manager Steve Gantt told The State newspaper.

BlackAmericaWeb News

I wanted to visit Myrtle Beach for a week when I graduated from high school. I have written my thoughts on society's "skinny is sexy" obsession on more than one occasion. I just couldn't resist commenting on the huge set of cajones BeautifulPeople.com has for publicly removing "overweight" people from their website. I am 99% sure that the mass removal is a publicity stunt. I hadn't heard of this website prior to reading about it a few days ago. I don't believe the "all publicity is good publicity" philosophy, but apparently I am in the minority. Honestly, I don't think anyone who is truly looking for love and companionship would want to join this website. We all have preferences, but losing your attraction to someone because they gained some holiday weight is pretty shallow. Wilson was holding her 1-year-old son in her arms when she died. The child also was shot and later had a finger amputated.

Police Sgt. That being said, I am always curious how cities and states come up with these payout figures. A $2.5 million dollar nest egg will do wonders for Tarika Wilson's children, but no amount of money can replace the loss of their mother.

My prayers go out to the Wilson family and the man who took her life. I am hard on police officers from time to time, but I realize they have a tough job. This shooting apparently happened during a drug bust/arrest. I understand that law enforcement officials cannot be timid when they attempt to apprehend pushers. This officer's recklessness could be attributed to his fear that his own life might be taken. His actions are inexcusable, but I think I understand his line of thinking. Stories like this make me appreciate my life even more. It was filled with lots of surprisingly fun new beginnings and a few endings that really tested my soul. I was able to travel abroad twice, keep my job, and reach most of my fitness goals. All in all, I have no right to complain. I am sure there are lots of people out there who would love to be in my shoes. My 2009 had its disappointments and heartbreaks, but those are to be expected. You cannot get everything you want in life. I have a pretty long list of things that I want to accomplish in 2010 and I am fairly confident that I can make most of things come to fruition. Optimism is usually half the battle. I hope you are stepping into 2010 with a "glass half full" perspective.

Julius Coxswainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09210721353101380170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2351930695794112678.post-47196217321372210012009-12-25T00:00:00.000-05:002009-12-25T00:00:06.741-05:00Merry Christmas Today is going to be a very busy day for your boy. Annise Parker, 53, takes the oath of office on Jan. 1 to lead the nation's fourth largest metropolis, with some 2.2 million residents. Currently Houston's city controller, Parker has been open about her sexuality throughout her political career and has three adopted children with her longtime partner, Kathy Hubbard. "Tonight the voters of Houston have opened the doors to history," the Democrat said after winning the city's Dec. 12 runoff election. "But now, from this moment, let us join as one community."

Source

I am pretty amazed that an openly gay mayor was elected in a major Southern city. It's not like I doubt her abilities. Mayor-elect Parker is a Houston native who is more than qualified. The cynic in me just has a hard time believing that she won this campaign off of the strength of her qualifications. Kudos to her campaign for defying some seemingly insurmountable odds.

I browsed the Internets yesterday to see how people were reacting. The majority of the opponents to Mayor-elect Parker didn't doubt her ability to lead. They were just angry that someone who "wasn't a fitting representation of their city" was going to be in charge. I understand that point of view, but those people need to get over it. The mayor-elect has been involved with the city's government for years and there was nary a sound of opposition. If there was some opposition prior to this election, I cannot find a record of it. In time, I hope all opposition to her is based on her policies and not her sexuality.

Until than, I will continue to shake my head and laugh at those who think the world is ending because the US has a Black President and an openly gay mayor.

Julius Coxswainhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09210721353101380170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2351930695794112678.post-54534281776465442132009-12-16T14:53:00.011-05:002010-01-07T20:15:12.266-05:00The Legalization of Male Prostitution
The owner of a brothel more than two hours’ drive from Las Vegas said she hopes to hire Nevada’s first legal male prostitutes within a month, now that state health officials have approved a method to test men for infectious diseases.
The world is ready for women, or even other men, to legally buy sex, said Shady Lady Ranch owner Bobbi Davis. Lots of people in the African-American and Latin communities have a color complex. The roots of that issue are too deep for me to explain in this blog post, but I encourage you to learn more about the topic if it's new to you.

I am a pretty dark skin dude, but my mother has light skin. The skin color issue was never a big deal in my home. I was taught to love people of all shades. Your boy was made fun of a lot as a child because I was darker than everyone else. If I didn't have high self-esteem and a loving support system, I would probably hate my appearance. Ironically, I know a number of women who are attracted to me, in part, because of my dark chocolate skin. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
